Bernard's Story

I am the oldest son of a career veteran of the US Army. Together with my two sisters Bernadine and Almaneta, and my younger brother, Mercer, we traveled throughout the United States and Europe during my childhood. My dad served two tours at Ft. Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma, and that was the longest time I lived anywhere until I left home for college. Now approaching the age of seventy-six, I can look back fondly over a life of educational achievements, corporate accomplishments, and commendable community service. I remember attending Lawton Senior High School after returning from Germany in 1961. I took an electronics class from Mr. Hamburger who gave us extra points on our grades for answering baseball questions. His unique way of motivating us to exceed his expectations helped me to stay focused on a path in Engineering. In high school I joined the basketball and track teams. I recall running on the 4 x 440 relay team with a great 880 yard runner named James Shields. I also remember sitting on the bench watching Mike Morgan dunk the basketball. Following high school, I attended Cameron Junior College for two years, joined the ROTC drill team and marched in the Junior Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, CA. I left Oklahoma in 1965 to finish my education at Howard University in Washington, D.C. While at Howard, I obtained a private pilot's license, a regular army commission, and later retired as a Captain from the Army Reserves. Aft...Expand for more
er college, I joined the family of Bell Telephone System companies and worked for 34 years in various subsidiaries until my retirement in 2003. Following retirement, I obtained a Master of Arts in Education and taught high school classes for four years at Somerset Vocational & Technical High School in New Jersey. It was something I had always wanted to do, and I really enjoyed it. During my time in New Jersey, I served as a coach, manager and director for children's athletic programs in our township. I probably still hold the record of fourteen years as the Voice of Pop Warner Football in Somerset. My wife Edwina and I have two children. Our son, Erik, and his wife Mioshi reside in Washington, D.C with our two grandsons, Evan and Ethan, who are 21 and 15 years old. Our daughter, Angela, and her husband Maurice, reside in Philadelphia, PA. They are parents to our other grandson, Roman, who is 13. We live outside of Atlanta in Conyers, GA, where I spend my time fishing and teaching chess classes for high school students at Hills Academy. I am writing a book series entitled, "A Look Back In Time: Memoir of a Military Kid in the 50s." It covers my military brat life from kindergarten through college. Volume II 2nd Edition has won US and International Book awards. Copies are available from Amazon. You can learn more about me on Google.
